Pokémon GO Eevee Evolutions: Names and Requirements

There are eight Eevee evolutions in Pokémon GO: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon. The fastest way to get a specific one is the nickname trick, but each nickname works only once per account. After that, you must use the normal in-game requirements.

Every Eevee evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy. Before you tap Evolve, check the silhouette on the button. If it does not show the Pokémon you want, stop and fix the requirement first.

You can also open Eevee’s Pokémon GO profile to review the species data before choosing which one to build.

Eevee availability changes with events, so check the current Pokémon GO events if you are trying to collect more Candy.

How to use the Eevee nickname trick

The nickname trick is useful when you need a particular evolution immediately, such as completing a Pokédex entry. It is not an unlimited shortcut.

  1. Open the Eevee you want to evolve.
  2. Tap the pencil beside its name and enter the exact nickname from the table.
  3. Close the name editor and return to the Pokémon’s summary screen.
  4. Look at the Evolve button. The silhouette should change to the evolution you selected.
  5. Only press Evolve after the correct silhouette appears.

Use the spelling shown above and avoid extra spaces or characters. If the button still shows a question mark or the wrong silhouette, do not spend 25 Candy. The game may have already consumed that nickname trick on your account, or the name may not have been recognized.

After the evolution succeeds, you can rename the Pokémon again. Renaming it later does not restore the one-time trick.

How to get each Eevee evolution without the nickname

Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon

These three Kanto evolutions share the regular Eevee evolution button. Without an unused nickname trick, the result is random. There is no Water Stone, Thunder Stone, or Fire Stone item that lets you choose between them in Pokémon GO.

If you need a specific one, do not gamble your Candy. Save another Eevee and use the name trick only if it is still available. If you already used the trick, keep catching Eevee and accept that the normal button can produce any of the three.

Espeon

To evolve Eevee into Espeon:

  1. Make Eevee your Buddy.
  2. Walk it for 10 km and earn at least 2 Eevee Candy from that Buddy.
  3. Keep Eevee as your active Buddy.
  4. Evolve it during the daytime while the Espeon silhouette is showing.

The distance and Candy are linked to that Buddy journey. If you change to another Buddy before evolving, check the preview again instead of assuming the requirement is still active.

Umbreon

Umbreon uses the same 10-km Buddy requirement as Espeon, but you must evolve Eevee at night. Keep Eevee as your active Buddy, confirm the Umbreon silhouette, and then evolve.

The game’s day/night state is what matters, not the time printed on your phone. If the preview does not show Umbreon, wait and check again rather than spending Candy.

Leafeon

Activate a Mossy Lure Module at a PokéStop and stand close enough for the lure’s evolution range to apply. Open Eevee’s evolution screen while the lure is active and confirm that the button shows Leafeon.

You do not need the nickname trick for this method. The Lure is the repeatable way to choose Leafeon, although it requires access to a Mossy Lure or another Trainer who activates one.

Glaceon

Activate a Glacial Lure Module at a PokéStop, stay within its range, and open Eevee’s evolution screen. When the Glaceon silhouette appears, you can evolve Eevee for 25 Candy.

Do not confuse a Glacial Lure with a regular Lure. The special Lure is what provides the Glaceon evolution option.

Sylveon

Sylveon is the Buddy-heart evolution. Make Eevee your Buddy and earn 70 Buddy Hearts with it. Once the requirement is complete, keep Eevee as your active Buddy and check for the Sylveon silhouette before evolving.

This is separate from the 10-km requirement for Espeon and Umbreon. Walking Eevee 10 km will not unlock Sylveon by itself, and earning 70 hearts will not unlock Espeon or Umbreon.

What is the best Eevee evolution?

There is no single best Eevee evolution for every Trainer. The right choice depends on whether you want a collection entry, a raid attacker, a PvP Pokémon, or simply a favourite design.

Your goalA sensible starting pointWhy
Complete the PokédexAny missing evolutionUse the nickname trick first if you want to avoid a random result
Great League or Ultra League projectUmbreonIt is commonly built for PvP, but check the exact IVs and league rules before investing
Fairy-type teamSylveonIt gives you a Fairy-type option and has a clear Buddy requirement
Ice-type collection or teamGlaceonThe Glacial Lure gives a predictable way to choose it
Grass-type collection or teamLeafeonThe Mossy Lure gives a predictable way to choose it
Simple Kanto entryVaporeon, Jolteon, or FlareonThese are the random trio, so use the one you still need

For PvP, do not evolve only because an Eevee has a high appraisal. The best league result can depend on level, IV spread, moves, and the league’s CP cap. You can review a candidate with the Pokémon GO IV Checker before spending Candy or Stardust.

Common mistakes that cause the wrong Eevee evolution

  • Using a nickname that has already been used. Each nickname trick is a one-time account unlock.
  • Skipping the preview. The silhouette is the last safety check. Never evolve a Pokémon when the preview still shows a question mark.
  • Changing Buddies too soon. Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon require Eevee to remain your active Buddy at the moment you evolve it.
  • Evolving at the wrong time. Espeon is daytime; Umbreon is nighttime.
  • Using the wrong Lure. Mossy is for Leafeon and Glacial is for Glaceon.
  • Counting the wrong Buddy progress. Espeon and Umbreon need 10 km plus 2 Candy; Sylveon needs 70 Hearts.
  • Forgetting the Candy cost. Every evolution in this guide needs 25 Eevee Candy.

If you are collecting Eevee for future trades, mark the ones you want to keep before evolving. Pokémon GO trading can change a Pokémon’s IVs, and a traded Eevee cannot be returned to its original Trainer. See the complete Pokémon GO trading guide before you trade a valuable one.

Frequently asked questions

How many Eevee evolutions are in Pokémon GO?

There are eight: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon.

What are the Pokémon GO Eevee evolution names?

The nickname names are Rainer for Vaporeon, Sparky for Jolteon, Pyro for Flareon, Sakura for Espeon, Tamao for Umbreon, Linnea for Leafeon, Rea for Glaceon, and Kira for Sylveon.

Does the Eevee name trick work more than once?

No. Each evolution nickname works once per account. After that, use the Buddy or Lure requirement, or accept the random result for Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon.

How much Candy does Eevee need to evolve?

Each Eevee evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy. The Buddy and Lure requirements choose the result; they do not remove the Candy cost.

Can I choose Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon without a name trick?

No. The normal evolution button randomly selects one of the three Kanto forms. Check the silhouette before evolving so you do not mistake a random result for a guaranteed choice.

Why is the evolution still showing a question mark?

The name may not have been recognized, the one-time nickname trick may already be used, the Buddy requirement may be incomplete, the Lure may be out of range, or the time of day may be wrong. Do not press Evolve until the intended silhouette appears.

This guide follows the current in-game evolution flow and the documented nickname, Buddy, and special-Lure methods. For the general evolution process, see Niantic’s Pokémon GO evolving help page and its Lure Module help page. For the nickname and requirement table, compare the current Pokémon GO Hub Eevee evolution guide with the in-game preview before evolving.

The most important safety rule remains simple: if the Evolve button does not show the form you want, do not tap it.
